Directorate of Public Relations (DRP) is the publicity wing of Ministry of Defence (MoD) that disseminates information to the media and the public at large about important events, programmes, achievements and policy decisions of the Ministry, Armed Forces , Inter-Service Organisation, Indian Coast Guard Border Roads Organisation, Defence Research & Development Organisation (DRDO) and Defence Public Sector Undertakings (DPSUs). The Directorate is mandated to ensure wide publicity of events related to defence in print, electronics & social media and provide support to media organization in covering such events, It regularly facilitates media interaction with the leadership, senior officials of the Ministry and officers of the Armed Forces through interviews, press conferences and press tours.
The headquarters of DRP is situated at South Block in New Delhi. There are 25 regional and branch offices across the country under its command. The Directorate publishes a fortnightly journal ‘Sainik Samachar’ in 13 language for the serving Armed Force personnel , ex-servicemen and general public. The Broadcasting Section of the Directorate produces radio programmes which are broadcast on All India Radio, on-a regular basis, for the Armed Forces personal.
The Photo Division of the DPR provides photo coverage to all the events related to Mod and the Armed Forces. The digitization of the Photo Archives section is in process. The Social media Cell of DPR carries out comprehensive campaigns on various events/decisions on different platforms , including Twitter, Facebook , Instagram , YouTube , LinkedIn and Koo, with the aim to reach out to maximum number of people . The DPR has also launched a user-friendly comprehensive web portal (www.sainiksamachar.nic.in).
The DPR arrange media facilitation and ensure publicity to major events such as Republic Day (RD) Celebrations, which includes the parade at Krtavya Path, Beating the Retreat ceremony and the Prime Minister’s Rally marking the culmination of NCC camp. The Directorate also brings out a commentary book on the RD Parade. Other calendar events that are accorded wide publicity are Independence Day celebrations at Red Fort; Defence Investiture Ceremony at Rashtrapati Bhawan ; DefExpo; Aero India, President’s Fleet review ; Vayu Shakti Commanders’ Conferences of Indian Army, Indian Navy, Indian Air Force & Indian Coast Guard; raising Days of the Services and activities of Border Roads Organisation (BRO), National Cadet Corp (NCC) etc.
The DPR organizes a Defence Correspondents’ Course (DCC) every year. The aim of DCC, one of the most prestigious courses conducted by the Mod, is to familiarize journalists drawn from a cross-section of media with the organisational and operational matters related to the Armed Force and the Ministry.
